Having been washed overboard 300 miles north east of Bermuda on a tack to the Azores in a strong gale by a rogue, or breaking cumulative wave, that broke over the boom of a 75′ Little Harbor I have a valuable article from the 90’s I would like to get to him. It was written by my wife and Co-captain and published in Ocean Navigator. It presents important information about recovery in huge seas and necessary equipment and preparation not covered in his excellent information.

By the way I’m 6000 miles into a solo circumnavigation of the North Atlantic out of Miami on my 42′ CaboRico Pilothouse, via Bermuda, Newfoundland, Iceland, etc.

Comment on PROUDLY INDEPENDENT IN A CHANGING INDUSTRY by Charles "Butch" Ulmer https://www.uksailmakers.com/2024/08/28/proudly-independent-industry/#comment-878 Thu, 29 Aug 2024 11:34:42 +0000 https://www.uksailmakers.com/?p=10833#comment-878 Dear Heather,
This is a well written expression of the difference between our group and those sailmakers now under the NTG umbrella. Good sails always have some design and material differences that cater to local conditions and who better to define those differences than a local sailmaker with “skin in the game”. Over my many years in the business, I’ve learned that individual sailmakers are an independent and creative breed and I would not be surprised if you hear from a few of them who like what they hear about the UK Sailmakers Philosophy.
Sincerely,
Butch Ulmer

Your Dad gave me a new sail and used my name for advertising in Yachting Magazine. The Ulmer sail won the International jr championship and the Fla senior championship. What a nice memory to see the Ulmer family doing well!

John, that is not nice to yell and definitely against the basic rule of fair sailing.

Should a boat doesn’t exist. Must be a mistake by him.

If I am even 20 boat lengths or more away I can tell if I can cross or not by picking a fixed point on my boat lined up on the starboard boat. If the starboard boat stays lined up on the fixed point then u must duck. Shifts etc must also b considered.

Comment on DUCK OR TACK? NAVIGATING CROSSING SITUATIONS by John M https://www.uksailmakers.com/2024/01/19/duck-or-tack-navigating-crossing-situations/#comment-803 Fri, 19 Jan 2024 21:01:14 +0000 https://www.uksailmakers.com/?p=10009#comment-803 I am pretty good judging whether I can cross or not. If it’s close, I duck. From about 5 boat lengths I just aim for his stern.
Sometimes on the approach I yell Port Tack. This sometimes confuses the other boat and they tack.
While keeping speed up I am able to drive over them to windward and give them them the exhaust off my sails.
This does not work all the time but you would be surprised how often it does.
